DOUGLAS,  GA (WALB) - Gubernatorial candidate Roy Barnes was in Douglas Tuesday.

After listening to poultry producers concerns at Po Boy's restaurant he headed over to the town's welcome center for lunch with dozens of local officials and business leaders.

Barnes served one term as governor and was defeated by Sonny Perdue. Barnes said today he never planned on running again until this year.

He felt obligated to get back into politics because he's concerned with the direction the state is going.

"I knew I had the experience and background to jumpstart our economy and I wanted to make sure those grandchildren have a place to live and work in Georgia and they don't have to leave this state," said Roy Barnes, Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate.

Barnes says if elected he'll develop a coherent economic development policy, provide more money to local schools so they don't have to raise taxes, and restore the homeowners tax credit that was put in to place when he was governor.

He also promises not to furlough teachers.
