ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Several hundred homes on Albany's west side were without power for a short time this morning when power lines were knocked down.

The outage knocked out service to several businesses and the traffic lights at the intersection of Dawson Road and Whispering Pines. Police were brought in to help direct the heavy traffic. Water, Gas, and Light crews worked quickly to find the problem and reroute power.

"I guess the bigger they are the harder they fall so a tree because of all the rain and the saturation of the ground a tree knocked out one of our circuits and because it's a busy area, it's the Westgate area," said Lorie Farkas, WG&L Assistant General Manager.

The power was out about 35 minutes. WG&L says they routinely check the lines around Albany for potential collisions between tree branches and power lines to prevent outages during a storm.
