ALBANY, GA (WALB) - 1,000 high school runners will be in town this weekend for a big cross country meet at Westover High School.

Hotels and businesses in Albany are partnering up and volunteering their time and materials to the athletes. WALB caught up with one employee at the Sleep Inn hotel who donated 1,000 cups and 500 plates, among other materials for the big meet.

She said this is all an effort to give back to visitors so they'll come back and stay at local hotels and eat at local restaurants, which will bring more money to the city.

"Hotels always want to help out. I'm so glad we're coming together as a team," said Jaye Lomax who's the marketing director at Sleep Inn.

Lomax said she thanks all the other businesses who are making donations to the meet. The convention center donated several gallons of water, the Best Western and Country Inn & Suites for Gatorade donations. The Hilton donated soda, water, and cups. The Quality Inn donated ice, cups, and popcorn. Local businesses plan on making donations for the cross country meet next year too.
