New blood bags in Albany

February 10, 2002

Albany-- Blood stocks in our hospitals are returning to normal.

But, Red Cross workers complain most of the blood is still coming in from other parts of the country--not here in Georgia.

Lab techs at the Albany Donor Center tried out the Baxter Company's new blood collection bags for the first time. More than week ago, blood supplies in Baxter bags were quarantined when white particles were found. Red Cross workers say things are returning to normal.

Cecilia Johnson, Collections Supervisor at the Albany Blood Bank, says, "We are still having to import blood but things getting better. As you know takes time to recover when you lose as much blood as we did."

The Baxter Company claims the white particles are natural components of blood and not caused by the bags. The CDC has not yet issued their results on the investigation.
