County completes charter review

By Karen Cohilas - bio | email

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Dougherty County Commission has finished tweaking a consolidated charter and will now send those changes to the city to review.

They only made one major change. They want the new commission to be elected for staggered terms with odd-numbered commissioners being elected initially for a two-year term. After the first term, those elections would be held every four years.

The commission decided to send the charter with proposed changes to the city commission for their review. Commissioner Gloria Gaines is the only commissioner who voted against it. If a consolidation referendum is held.  She wants it to take place during an election where voter turnout is expected to be at its highest so the most citizens can have input.
