Burglars smash window, swipe money order machine

DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA (WALB) - Smash 'n' grab burglars struck a Dougherty County convenience store overnight stealing a money order machine.

Police were called out to the Express Lane on Newton Road around 3 o'clock Wednesday morning. The store's burglar alarm went off after a pair of crooks broke the glass window and grabbed a Money Gram money order machine off the store counter.

Express Lane's district manager says she's worried about the blank money orders being in the wrongs hands and frustrated that burglars targeted her store once again.

"We just installed a $10,000 surveillance system in the store just to try and curtail what's been going on. We just hope the surveillance they (police) got this morning will help them in catching the people who've done this," said Jackie Grant, Express Lane district manager.

This is the second time the store has been burglarized in the past 7 weeks. The Enmark on Clark Avenue was also hit by burglars but it isn't clear if the two crimes are related.

Management has placed a stop payment on those checks. Police urge local businesses to be on the lookout for suspicious money orders.

Dougherty County police officers collected evidence which included a footprint and samples of blood from one of the suspects who was cut by the broken glass. Store surveillance only captured the suspects' hands.

If you have any information about this break in you're asked to contact the Dougherty County Police at 430-6600.
