ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Department of Transportation is getting ready to open two northbound lanes on Highway 19 in Lee County.

It will complete the four-laning of U.S. 19 in Sumter and Lee Counties. Tuesday crews put down the final layer of asphalt in the northbound lanes.

It's a hot job, the asphalt is about 300 degrees when it's being rolled out.

The project in Lee County included widening about 10-miles of highway.

"We're trying to get the top layer on it now, so we can open it back up, we've been working hard on it. Rain had us down for a long time, but we're back about on schedule," said Clint law, Oxford Construction Superintendent of Paving.

While both northbound and southbound lanes will be open, they might be restricted to a single lane through December when the project is expected to wrap up. Drivers can call 511 for updated information about the project and others across the state.
