LOWNDES COUNTY, GA (WALB) - Better warnings against flooding is the goal of authorities in Lowndes County.

Three new river level gauges will be installed soon.

Lowndes County Commissioners approved the expense of one of those this week.

The first will be installed on the little river at the Highway 122 bridge between Hahira and Barney.

"That will be installed at the cost of the county monitored by hydrologists and the National Weather Service along with EMA," said Paige Dukes, Lowndes County Public Information Officer.

"That data will be made available to our entire community and hopefully we can plan and they can give us better forecasting in the future."

River gauges are one the best tools to give advance warning of rising rivers.
