ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Friday eyewitnesses to the death of a man struck by a pickup truck on busy Highway 19 South, say there wasn't time to stop.
Twenty-eight year-old Shawn Lemke was killed Thursday night when he stepped into the path of the truck just inside Lee County. Lemke was leaving Homerun Foods and crossing the busy highway when he was hit by a southbound pickup driven by 45-year-old Mike Rodefer. As usual, traffic was heavy. Nick Carr was driving behind Rodefer's truck and said one car swerved to avoid Lemke and several vehicles slammed on their brakes. Carr says he jumped out to help.
"I checked to see if he had a pulse and he was fine and I checked to see if he was breathing and he had a light breath, but kind of gasping though, but you know everybody was trying to move him and stuff, but I didn't want to move him, I just kept the young man still until the ambulance got there," said Nick Carr, a witness.
Lemke died about three hours after he got to the hospital. No charges will be filed against Rodefer.
