Albany -- GBI agents say the death of a Georgia State Patrol Commander was likely suicide, and it might have been to avoid pending indictments from the FBI for embezzlement.

State patrol cars lined the Randolph County yard of Robert Bonner Thursday. The Perry post commander died from a gunshot wound Wednesday afternoon. The 54-year-old had worked at the Cuthbert post for years and was just days away from retirement. His wife, who has cancer, is the Randolph County Clerk.

For at least the past two years FBI agents have been looking into whether the Bonners may have devised moneymaking schemes to benefit themselves. A County commissioner says these involved County contracts with his lawn care business, discrepancies on county credit cards, and traffic tickets.
