VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -  The Valdosta State athletic program is expanding.

The Blazers will add women's soccer to their list of sports in two years.

VSU president Dr. Patrick Schloss and athletic director Herb Reinhard made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.

The Valdosta State women's soccer team will begin play in the fall of 2011.

A search for a head coach will begin immediately with plans to have a coach hired early in 2010.

The VSU women's soccer team will play on a field that will be built behind the recently constructed fieldhouse on Mary Street.

The fieldhouse, which is home to the VSU football team, already has office and locker room space for a women's soccer team.

The Gulf South Conference is home to some of the top DII women's soccer programs in the nation and Herb Reinhard believes community support and location of Valdosta State will allow the Lady Blazer soccer program to reach that status.

The addition of women's soccer gives Valdosta State 12 athletic teams with six male and six female.
