Albany - The blood shortage is forcing hospitals to delay or cancel some elective surgeries. Phoebe Putney Hospital is delaying some elective surgeries until it can bring its blood supplies back to normal. But emergency care has not been effected the blood shortage.

"We have enough safe blood to handle emergency care today," said Dr. George Chastain. "We hope to hear good news from the Red Cross by the end of the week."

Phoebe Putney hopes the refill its blood supply by Friday. Hospital officials say if a major emergency occurred before then, they would have to use the quarantined blood.
