ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Dougherty County Police are reporting that the man found dead in the Flint River Wednesday afternoon was murdered. Detectives are now treating the case as a criminal homicide investigation.
Haggines' body was discovered floating Wednesday in the Flint River. It has been sent to Atlanta for an autopsy while Dougherty and Albany Police try and retrace his steps.
Two fishermen discovered the body around 4:30 PM. Right now police are calling it an accidental drowning. Based on a description of what he was wearing when family members reported him missing Tuesday, police believe the body is that of 52 year old Willie Haggines.
Investigators hope the autopsy may confirm the body's identification.
"We're trying to locate either dental records or fingerprint records or something of that nature and are not having much luck. We've not been able to find any dental records or fingerprint on file," said Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek.
Police say Haggins has no history with law enforcement. Thursday police spend the day interviewing neighbors and friends to determine who might have seen Haggines last and if he typically spends time near the river.
