Lowndes County-- Rick Husband and his wife Evelyn lived in Lowndes County for nearly two years, while he was stationed at Moody Air Force Base.

Family friend Lynn Tessin looks over an e-mail from her old friend Rick Husband; her last contact with the astronaut before his tragic death. "Evelyn and I are doing fine," it reads. "Have two beautiful children..."

Tessin and her husband were in the same Sunday school class with the Husbands while Rick was stationed at Moody Air Force Base in the early 80's.

She remembers his strong faith and remarkable talent. "He had a beautiful voice and always sang in the choir. He led several youth groups and was very involved in the church."

She still has the gift the Husbands gave her nearly 20 years ago, at her first baby shower. "This is the baby blanket and the card, and where they signed the guest book when our son Blanton was born."

Although almost two decades have passed since their last meeting, Tessin says everything about Husband seems the same. "You see him on the reports on TV and he's got this bouncy walk, always pointing, waving and smiling at people. That's just how he was."

And no one who knew husband is surprised he made it to the stars. "He always told us that was his goal and Evelyn said he'd do it one day and I'm not at all surprised he did."

Even though she's saddened by her friend's tragic death, Tessin takes comfort in remembering the remarkable impact Husband left on this world and beyond.

The Husbands moved from Lowndes County to Apple Valley, California in 1985 after Rick was transferred from Moody to another military base.
