ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  After a tough year that led to cuts to its service agencies, the United Way of Southwest Georgia kicked off its new fundraising campaign Thursday.

The organization hopes to raise $1.5 million, the same goal as last year. The president of the United Way says last year was rocky for donations, and he hopes to meet the financial goal this year.

"We always get excited at this time to kick off our campaign so this year we're excited to reach our goal and fund projects in the community in great capacity than previous years," said United Way CEO Dwayne Miles.

So far the United Way has met 20% of its goal.
