SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) - People in Sylvester are rallying around a man who broke his neck in a swimming accident two weeks ago. 25-year old Zack Griffith, an MCLB employee, is now paralyzed from the neck down.

Now the community is coming together to raise money to help with his medical bills. Friends and family of Zack Griffith hope enough people will contribute to his benefit so they can send him to a spine specialist in Atlanta.

"I know if I was in the same situation he would do the same to help me out," said John Thompson, a good friend of Griffith who is a manager at RCA Service Center in Sylvester.

"He has never met a stranger," Thompson noted. "His personality was so good, and he was always all smiles."

Johnson said they both have a passion for detailing cars and they love fast motors.

"When he said he broke his neck, I thought he was hurt in a motorcycle or a car," Thompson said.

Now, Thompson said he's using his passion for car parts to help out his friend. He and another family friend, Ricky Hall, are selling raffle tickets for a benefit later this month. They hope to raise enough money to send Griffith to an Atlanta hospital so he can move his arms hands better.

"Right now I'm hoping he comes out of the hospital walking, said Ricky Hall who is cousins with Griffith's wife. "I believe miracles do happen, but we will also need everyone to come together to help us out."

Zack Griffith remains hospitalized in Albany. His family members said they will continue to pray for his recovery.

People interested in helping with the Zack Griffith fund can donate money to the Ameria Bank located on Dawson Road in Albany. Griffith's friend Lisa who also accepting donations at 229-343-8930. People may also purchase a $5 raffle ticket at the RCA Service Center in Sylvester.

Winners for the raffle will be announced at the community benefit and Barbeque September 26 at Jeffords Park in Sylvester. Three winners will be picked from the raffle.

They will have a chance to win a free car detailing job, free tire roatation, and oil change.
