ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A state and a county leader want to know what you think about consolidating Albany and Dougherty governments.

State Representative Winfred Dukes and Dougherty County Commissioner Gloria Gaines plan to host a consolidation "listening session."

Gaines says none of her constituents has come to her demanding to vote on the issue. She says she wants to hear from as many people as possible.

Dukes believes the city or county or both will send the General Assembly a charter to act on during the upcoming session, but Gaines isn't sure that will happen.

"I truly believe that either one of those bodies or both of those bodies are going to come up with a document that we can act on and give the people the opportunity to vote," Dukes said.

"I don't think we should be pressed to do anything other than what we've done and that is a slow and deliberate consideration of this issue," Gaines said.

That listening session will be next Thursday September 17th at Albany Tech from six to ten PM.
