Robert's College Football Picks

Posted: Updated:

November 25, 2009

The Georgia and LSU debacles cost me a perfect week.  10-2 is still something to brag about and we need some confidence heading into rivalry week and my final picks of the season.

Georgia at Georgia Tech -   The Yellow Jackets are a big favorite but to my anonymous Tech fan who heckled me this week about the Kentucky loss.  That may not have been a good thing for the Jackets.  Georgia has been beating themselves in most of their games and while the Jackets won last year they still gave up 42 points.  I think a focused and still talented UGA team will show up to play Saturday night.....Georgia  34-31

Alabama at Auburn -   The Tide ended a six game losing streak to Auburn last year and after watching the Tigers lines of scrimmage against UGA I am convinced Alabama should have no problem on the Plains Friday...Alabama  30-0

Florida St. at Florida - I have heard some experts say the Seminoles have a chance to catch the Gators thinking about the Tide.   Not without Christian Ponder and a defense that has no clue how to stop Tim Tebow.  I know the Gators offense is not the same this season but the FSU defense has been very poor...Florida 42-10

Clemson at South Carolina-  Gamecocks need a win to avoid a second straight second half collapse.  This is perhaps the toughest in-state rivalry to predict but I think Clemson has too much for a USC defense hurting with injuries..Clemson 28-13

Ole Miss at Mississippi St. - The Egg Bowl is in Starkville where new MSU coach Dan Mullen could use a win over the Rebs to set up year two of his program.   Should be a shootout but I think the Rebels have the edge with Dexter McClusters...Ole Miss  27-24

Tennessee at Kentucky - Wildcats are riding high after last week's win at Georgia and could give them the their first win over the Vols in 25 years.   Kentucky 20-17

Arkansas at LSU -  Mark Richt may have his problems but there are nothing compared to Les Miles after the blunder in Oxford.  The Hogs have won two straight over the Bayou Tigers have QB Josh Mallett may be playing the best of any QB in the nation.   Tigers secondary is very good and that could save Miles' bacon for now....LSU  31-30

Boston College at Maryland -  Terps can't buy a break but may finish the season with a win in their last home game...Maryland  24-21

Wake Forest at Duke -  Blue Devils have been playing well but can't seem to finish.  Wake is not where they were three years ago as ACC champions...Duke 30-27

Miami at South Florida - The Canes avoided an upset and face a South Florida team that could lay claim as the second best college football team in the Sunshine State....Miami 24-20

North Carolina at NC State-  The Tar Heels are playing better than just about anyone in the ACC while the Wolfpack can't wait for next year....UNC  32-22

Virginia Tech at Virginia -  The Hokies are back on track after a midseason slump.  The Cavs are in a slump but this rivalry game is always close...Virginia Tech  17-13

Bonus Title game picks December 5th

Florida vs Alabama -   The winner of this game once again qualifies for the BCS title game.  Barring an upset both will be unbeaten.  Tim Tebow took the Gators to the title over the Tide last year but the Florida offense is not as good as last year and Alabama's defense is better.......Alabama 23-20

Georgia Tech vs Clemson -  The Jackets won the first meeting way back in September by jumping out to a big lead.  Clemson is a different team right now and frankly their defensive line and offensive firepower makes me believe they will get the breaks this game...Clemson 31-24

See you next year

November 20, 2009

A decent week at 9-4.  The upset specials didn't pan out but if they do.  I then look like a genius.

Kentucky at Georgia -   Bulldogs coming off a big win against Auburn while the Wildcats have won two straight.   Kentucky has lost QB Mike Hartline for the season due to injury.  That should be a good thing for UGA except for the fact that Kentucky's terrific sophomore Randall Cobb torched Willie Martinez's defense last year in Lexington.   The young skill players on the Georgia offense has gotten better with experience and the Bulldogs survive at home...Georgia 34-27

LSU at Ole Miss-  Rebels coming off an impressive win over Tennessee while the Tigers are struggling with injuries.  I still like the LSU defense...LSU 24-14

Vanderbilt at Tennessee -  The off the field issues in Knoxville would be bad if Tennessee faced a tough opponent. Vandy though has struggled on offense and that is not good news...Tennessee  27-10

Mississippi St. at Arkansas -  This may be the best game of the day.   State Dogs are improving under Dan Mullen and the Hogs Ryan Mallet could be a Heisman candidate if he is back in Fayetteville next season...Arkansas 38-31

FIU at Florida - Georgia fans who want to know why Florida is playing for a third national title in four years.  One is talent.  two is coaching and the third is non-conference schedule.  Georgia has played Oklahoma State, Arizona State and Tennessee Tech ( I am not counting the in-state rivals for both).  Florida has played Charleson Southern, Troy and FIU.    You don't have to schedule tough non-conference games when you play an 8 game SEC schedule.Florida 56-0

Chattanooga at Alabama -  The big question Nick Saban has heard this week is how long does he play his starters and can Mark Ingram get enough stats to stay in the Heisman race....Alabama 42-0

Maryland at Florida St. -  Seminoles could have a QB issue in August if E.J. Manuel plays like he did last week at Wake.  FSU needs one more win to become bowl eligible and with their last game at #1 Florida next week.  This one is a must win...Florida State 31-17

North Carolina at Boston College-  The Heels are perhaps the hottest team in the ACC this side of Georgia Tech...UNC  20-17

Duke at Miami - This could be a very entertaining game with Duke's offense but I think the Canes are not going to be in a good mood after their trip to Chapel Hill... Miami 28-17

Virginia at Clemson -  Tigers are in the ACC title game but better not overlook the Cavaliers who appear to be headed for a coaching change at years end...Clemson  23-16

NC State at Virginia Tech -  Hokies looked very good against Maryland while the Wolfpack defense has their problems... Virginia Tech  33-13

Ohio St. at Michigan -  The Wolverines need a win over their rivals to avoid finishing last in the Big Ten.  I think they can keep it close for a while but not 60 minutes..Ohio State 27-13

November 13, 2009

Believe it or not I almost forgot to do my college picks with all the high school playoff action.  After a 12-1 record last week this would be a good week to retire.  But on we go.

Auburn at Georgia -  My instinct is leaning to Georgia though I have no idea how the Bulldogs defense can stop the Auburn offense with the way everyone has been torching them all season.  Auburn's defense has just as many problems and I think Georgia at home will help their play..Georgia  30-28

Florida at South Carolina -  Gators have trounced the Gamecocks in the last two years but with the east having been clinched and the Gators offensive problems.   Forget about Carolina's late season collapses....Why not...South Carolina 20-17

Kentucky at Vanderbilt -  Commodores are the only winless team in the conference while the Wildcats have not been impressive in league play...Vandy 23-16

Tennessee at Ole Miss-   Vols have yet to win on the road this season while the Rebels big season has gone down in flames. The off field arrests do not hurt the Vols in terms of talent on the field but they will have an impact mentally.  Ole Miss  27-21

Alabama at Mississippi State -   The Tide have had their issues in Starkville but not this year. Dan Mullen is on the right road in getting the State dogs back to winning in the future...Alabama 30-10

Louisiana Tech at LSU-   Tigers face former LSU assistant Derek Dooley and will not be in a good mood after last week's game against Alabama....LSU  38-13

Troy at Arkansas -   The Trojans are a talented team and I think they will scare the bacon out of Arkansas this weekend... Arkansas 38-37

Georgia Tech at Duke -   It is hard to believe this game is a big one in deciding the Coastal Division title.  Blue Devils are the surprise team and David Cutcliffe deserves coach of the year considertaion.  Coach Paul Johnson points out Duke is much improved defensively and this game will be close for about 40 minutes...Georgia Tech  38-24

Florida State at Wake Forest -  The Seminoles streak of bowl appearances is in jeopardy with Christian Ponder gone for the year.   Redshirt freshman E.J Manuel makes his first start on the road against a very goood Wake defense while FSU has shown the ability to not play defense this season...Wake Forest  27-10

Miami at North Carolina -   The Heels have won two straight and Chapel Hill has been a house of horrors for Miami who can get back in the race with a Duke win over Georgia Tech... North Carolina 27-23

Clemson at NC State-  After a early stumble, Tigers are beginning to come together and look like they are headed to Tampa in December..Clemson  34-31

Virginia Tech at Maryland -  Hokies are on the road against a Maryland team that has been tough in College Park...Virginia Tech  20-14

Bonus pick  West Alabama at Albany St. -  Rams have lost five straight playoff games but will likely have a chip on their shoulder after they way they played in last week's loss to Fort Valley State.  West Alabama got in with a four overtime win over North Alabama but they also lost to a West Georgia team that had lost 21 straight...   Albany State 27-24

November 4, 2009

I am starting to get the hang of the ACC with a 9-4 record.    Was right on with Georgia and Florida and missed on the Gamecocks at Tennessee.   Not a big week this week but an early start in the ACC again.

Tennessee Tech at Georgia -  No A.J. Green for the Bulldogs and if they miss him in this game then the walls will really start closing in.  Georgia needs a big blowout to have their confidence ready for their final three games.. All are winnable and all three can be losses...Georgia 45-17

Furman at Auburn - Tigers are also celebrate homecoming but unlike Georgia are coming off a big SEC win.... Auburn 51-14

Vanderbilt at Florida- I am glad I waited a day to make my predictions after Wednesday's news that Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes will serve a full game suspension for his eye gouging efforts...  Florida 38-13

LSU at Alabama -  Crimson Tide has had two weeks to get ready for this game and the Bayou Tigers essentially the same after last week's win over Tulane.   Alabama's offense has been slipping of late and that is not good because LSU can play defense... Alabama 20-10

South Carolina at Arkansas -    An interesting game with Carolina's defense going against Ryan Mallett and the Arkansas offense.... Arkansas  28-24

Eastern Kentucky at Kentucky-  Wildcats bounce back after home loss to Missisippi State hurts their chances for bowl eligibility... Kentucky 41-14

Memphis at Tennessee-   The rivals from each side of the Volunteer State meet in Knoxville where the Vols are on the up swing...Tennessee  34-17

Northern Arizona at Ole Miss-  Rebels back at home and wanting to take out a loss at Auburn on the Lumberjacks...Ole Miss  48-12

Wake Forest at Georgia Tech -   Jackets back in the ACC and back at home for what can be a very dangerous game.  Demon Deacons are always a strong defensive team under Jim Grobe but with Wake QB Riley Skinner nursing a concussion the Jackets move a step closer to the Coastal Division title...Georgia Tech  31-24

Florida St. at Clemson -  Seminoles have won two straight and are still in the race for the Atlantic title though they need some help. Christian Ponder practiced Wednesday and is expected to play.  The problem is Ponder cannot play defense for the Seminoles..Clemson 27-24

Virginia at Miami-  Hurricanes pulled a big rally last week to knock off Wake while the Cavs are back to their slump after a home loss to Duke...Miami  16-10

Maryland at N.C. State-  Wolfpack have a great offense and no defense like FSU and Maryland has a solid offense under Rallph Friedgen...Maryland  36-34

Duke at North Carolina-  In case you haven't noticed the Blue Devils have just one ACC loss and a win at Carolina and next week againt Georgia Tech could have Duke in the title game. This is a bigger rivalry in basketball but it is still big...UNC 28-14

October 28, 2009

A rough week at 7-5 and all five losses came in the ACC.   I would be better off picking ACC basketball games.   Undefeated in the SEC is still something to boast about.

Georgia vs Florida (Jacksonville)   The last time the Dogs had a week off they beat the Gators 42-30 two years ago.    This year the Mighty Gators are mighty confused about their offensive troubles and quite frankly should have lost to Arkansas at home two weeks ago.   Problem for the Bulldogs this year is there is no Knowshon Moreno and no Matthew Stafford against a Florida defense that is better than last years... Florida 31-10

Ole Miss at Auburn -  Tigers are reeling not because of three straight losses but because the high powered offense is out of gas.  Rebels showed they are back with a dominating win against Arkansas.  Tigers need to force Jevan Snead to throw the ball to them to have a chance in this morning game on the Plains... Ole Miss  27-10

South Carolina at Tennessee -  The ol ball coach heads to Rocky Top to face a Volunteer team still beating their chest after giving Alabama a scare..    There is no such thing as a moral victory in the SEC... South Carolina  24-14

Mississippi St. at Kentucky -  State Dogs head to the Bluegrass wondering what might have been if a replay call had gone their way.   Wildcats defense will be ready for the state spread offense..Kentucky   23-21

Georgia Tech at Vanderbilt-  Jackets better get ready to play because Vanderbilt has a great run defense and their defense is disciplined enought to handle their assignments.  Problem is the Vandy offense...Georgia Tech 35-17

Tulane at LSU -   With Alabama on the horizon, LSU better put the Green Wave away early which is something they didn't do last year but they did win...LSU 34-7

Eastern Michigan at Arkansas-  Bobby Petrino knows how to schedule non-conference games...Arkansas 45-0

Here we go in the ACC:

North Carolina at Virginia Tech -   Should be quite a defensive battle but the Hokies have enough offense and are at home.. Va Tech  27-17

NC State at Florida State-  There is no place like home for FSU opponents lately but the Seminoles should beat the Wolfpack...Florida State  38-21

Miami at Wake Forest-  Canes coming off tough o-t loss to Clemson while Wake lost to the Navy again... Miami  31-20

Duke at Virginia - Blue Devils are a game over 500 and dare say flirting to get bowl eligibile... Duke 20-19

Coastal Carolina at Clemson-  Tigers enjoy the off week.. Clemson  31-10

Central Michigan at Boston College - Eagles better be ready for the Chippewas and their great quarterback Dan LeFevour... BC   35-24

October 21, 2009

A very good week with only three losses.   Knew Auburn would struggle but felt the Tigers could beat the CAts but was wrong and missed the Jackets over the Hokies.

Florida State at North Carolina - Thursday night battle between two teams still without an ACC win.  FSU has the offense and the Tar Heels the defense... Florida State  24-20

Georgia Tech at Virginia-   The Cavaliers have won three straight games and catch the Jackets on the road coming off that big win over Virginia Tech.  Charlottesville has been a house of horrors for Georgia Tech and I think there is going to be a letdown..Virginia  17-14

Maryland at Duke-  Blue Devils have surprised me this year with plenty of offense and three wins. Maryland will be ready coming off loss to Virginia..Maryland 38-34

Clemson at Miami-  Huge game that will mean alot depending on which team wins.  Tigers coming off a big win against Wake Forest while the Canes have had a couple of cupcakes after such a demanding opening schedule...Miami  21-17

Boston College at Notre Dame:  Eagles always play the Irish tough and Notre Dame is coming off tough loss to USC...Boston College  34-31

Wake Forest at Navy:  Demon Deacons should be able to handle Navy's option offense though the Midshipmen have won five straight and it is homecoming...Wake Forest 28-24

Auburn at LSU - Tigers have been brought back to earth after two straight losses.  Both of which the Tigers offense has struggled. Bad news is LSU defense is among the best in the SEC...LSU 27-17

Florida at Mississippi State-  Gators face their former offensive coordinator Dan Mullen who is now head coach in Starkville.   His former QB may show some mercy but Gators need a dominating win after two shaky performances... Florida 48-13

Tennessee at Alabama -  For all the publicity about Lane Kiffin's verbal barbs at Florida.  The Vols coach has also had some moments with the Crimson Tide.  Hiring Bama's recruiting coordinator and then going after Tide recruits.  Tennessee was then turned down in request to wear home orange on the road... I sense orange juice..Alabama 28-7

Arkansas at Ole Miss-  Reeling Rebels need a win and catch an Arkansas team that has to be feeling confident after their near upset of Florida...  Ole Miss  31-27

Vanderbilt at South Carolina-  Gamecocks are back at home after getting taped at Alabama. Vandy cannot throw the football and that is not good against the Carolina defense..South Carolina 26-16

Louisiana-Monroe at Kentucky- Wildcats getting a big win on the road at Auburn and will be a force in November... Kentucky  37-22

October 16, 2009

A brutal week at 8-6 with misses on UGA, LSU and Auburn (too chicken to go with my gut). Like Georgia let us hope to bounce back.

Georgia at Vanderbilt - Bulldogs are reeling not just from back to back losses but the fact they were outcoached by boy wonder Lane Kiffin last week in Knoxville.   The lack of a running game is a concern against a tough Vandy defense but the Commodores struggle throwing the football which should be the break Georgia needs....Georgia 30-13

Kentucky at Auburn -  Tigers were blown out last week and there has been some fall out.   Kentucky is bringing a solid defense to the Plains but is without their starting quarterback due to injury...Auburn 27-7

Arkansas at Florida -  Hogs head to the Swamp hoping to catch the Gators still celebrating their win in the Bayou.  Arkansas is a much better team than the one that lost to Georgia but still not good enough...Florida 49-24

South Carolina at Alabama- Gamecock fans must really be agonizing over Rennie Curran's knock down to beat them in Athens in the second week of the season.  That play is the reason why the Gamecocks would be unbeaten.  South Carolina has a very good defense and I think the ol ball coach can generate some points with Stephen Garcia to make this one close...
Alabama 24-20

Mississippi State at Middle Tennessee State-   The Bulldogs have lost to Georgia Tech and Houston at home and a loss on the road to the Blue Raiders might qualify them for the FCS...Mississippi State 35-34

UAB at Ole Miss- Rebels coming off a tough loss at home to Alabama and are 1-2 in the SEC and all but out of the west division race after so much summer love.  Blazers are better in Neil Callaway's third season but I think Ole Miss pulls it out in the second half...Ole Miss 34-16

Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech-  The big game in the ACC and one of the biggest in the nation.  Hokies have been rolling since their season opening loss to Alabama and quite frankly Tech's play since then makes Alabama look like the best team in the nation.  Virginia Tech is known for defense but their offense leads the ACC in scoring.  Jacket defense will play better than they did last week but not good enough...Virginia Tech 28-21

Wake Forest at Clemson -   Quite frankly I would be better off throwing a dart up against the wall to pick the winner of this game.  Tigers are at home and I will go with them..Clemson 23-20

NC State at Boston College -  The sleeper of the ACC for me is in a coma.  Wolfpack lost at Duke while the Eagles are going to flush a bad trip to Blacksburg out of their system..BC 38-24

Virginia at Maryland -  Where have the Cavs been all season.  Two straight wins and the defense is getting tougher. Terps have also turned it around. Maryland 19-17

Miami at Central Florida - Hurricanes enjoy another week out of conference,  Miami 42-14

Texas vs Oklahoma -  Sooners are out of the national championship hunt and would love to do the same to the Longhorns.  Horns though should be focused after they were probably looking ahead in last week's game with Colorado..Texas 35-31

USC at Notre Dame-  Irish are 4-1 while the Trojans have  been maturing into the USC team we are used to seeing.. USC  35-24

October 9, 2009

Not a great weekend with a 10-7 record and the ACC really hurt me.   I don't know why you bother trying to predict these games.  But that is what makes the games fun.  Should get an asterik for the Georgia pick after the SEC ruled the official should not have called A.J. Green for excessive celebration.   A flag that I personally believe that had it not been thrown, Georgia would have won the game.  But that is a subject in which we will all not agree.  This is a big Saturday in the SEC where these games are going to determine who is playing for what in November.

Georgia at Tennessee:   The game is not going to have that big of bearing like it once did in the SEC east since the Vols are 0-2.  But for Georgia this game is huge.  The LSU loss has not knocked Georgia out of the east race.  A loss to the Vols will and turn up the criticism on which way the UGA program is heading.   Tennessee found some offense late in last week's loss to Auburn which is not good news for a UGA team that needs to run the football or it is going to be long, long season... Georgia 27-17

Florida at LSU:  The big question of course is will Tim Tebow play after sustaining his concussion two weeks ago.   I don't think it matters at this point. LSU is coming off a tough game against Georgia while Florida has had two weeks to get ready.  Tigers defense is tough and the linebackers are very fast which I think will be the difference...LSU  20-17

Auburn at Arkansas:  For those of you who think Auburn got their first test of the season last week at Tennessee will learn that this is the week the Tigers have to prove they are for real. The Arkansas defense may not be as good as Tennessee's but their offense is and the Tigers defense has struggled in the second half of games...Auburn  38-34

Alabama at Ole Miss:  Alabama fans have been resenting all the preseason hype the Rebels got this summer.   At the time, I thought it was more concern among the Crimson Tide who were worried about losing to the Rebs in Oxford this year.  There is no question Alabama has played the best of any team in the SEC (Florida included) and most likely the nation.   Alabama's strength is an offense that has perfect balance....Alabama 35-20

Kentucky at South Carolina: The Gamecocks have to be thinking what if with Rennie Curran's knockdown of a game winning touchdown pass at Georgia.  If Curran doesn't make that play, the Gamecocks are 5-0.  Kentucky is coming off back to back games with Florida and Alabama and will be looking to bring Carolina back to earth....South Carolina 24-17

Vanderbilt at Army:  Commodores take a 2-3 record to the Hudson River to face an Army team that lost to Duke...Vandy 26-20

Houston at Mississippi St. -    This game could be a real shootout between these two offense.  Cougars dropped hard after a loss at UTEP ( I got that one right) but I think they rebound against the Starkville Dogs..Houston  38-35

Georgia Tech at Florida St.-   The Yellow Jackets enter the big top into what has become a real circus in Tallahassee.  There is no question FSU coach Bobby Bowden deserves to decide when he will retire because if it wasn't for Bowden FSU would be in the Sun Belt Conference and not the ACC.  However, the coach needs to ask himself is he doing more harm than good by wanting to coach through 2010.   As for the game,  Georgia Tech rolls...Jackets  31-23

Boston College at Virginia Tech -  Big game for FSU and GT fans because the cross-division matchup could help both when it comes to the division races...Virginia Tech  17-14

Indiana at Virginia-  The Cavaliers stunned the world with an upset of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Hoosiers bring a wide open offense and should be a challenge for the UVA defense...Indiana 33-26

Maryland at Wake Forest-  The Terps pulled a big surprise by knocking off Clemson. Now they head on the road to face a Demon Deacon team that is proving to be tough to beat at home...Wake Forest 31-28

Duke at NC State-  Wolfpack are likely not going to be in a good mood after losing last week at Wake Forest.  Duke is playing better but I dont' think they have enough for the Pack
...NC State 28-13

Florida A&M at Miami-  Canes get a week to savor a big win over Oklahoma but better be ready for a Rattler offense that can score points.... Miami  41-19

Georgia Southern at North Carolina -  I hope the check the Eagles get for coming to Chapel Hill has plenty of zeroes because the Tar Heels are not going to be in good mood after back to back ACC losses...UNC 42-10

October 2, 2009

I am glad there are no Thursday games this week.  Allows me time to contemplate and come up with better picks.  Although 12-4 last week wasn't bad.  FSU and UNC cost me along with Maryland.  Some tough games this week and let's dive in.

LSU at Georgia -   The Tigers say they are looking for payback after Georgia scored 52 last year in Baton Rouge.   What I think is the key stat is LSU's running game.  Tigers scored 38 last year on UGA defense and their offensive line just smashed Georgia's front.  That is not going to happen this year with a LSU running game that has struggled so far.  UGA's defense has struggled in the passing game but not the running game... UGA   24-20

Georgia Tech at Mississippi St. - After last year's 38-7 win in Atlanta, some Jacket fans may assume this is an automatic W.   I don't believe that.   State held LSU to 37 yards rushing which is not good news for a Tech option attack that has had its problems this year with good defensive fronts.  Coach Paul Johnson admits he and his coaching staff are sailing into unchartered waters...This will be a shootout...  Georgia Tech  35-28

Auburn at Tennessee-  The conventional wisdom is the Tennessee defense and first road game will be the end of the Tigers four game winning streak.  The difference in this game is simple.  Auburn has a hot quarterback and the Vols do not.... AU 31-21

Alabama at Kentucky -  The Crimson Tide also leaving the state of Alabama to face a Kentucky team that is likely going to be a bit fired up after their disappointing performance against Florida. This is not going to be an easy Tide win because Rich Brooks loves physical football like Nick Saban and last year the Cats gave the Tide a battle in Tuscaloosa....Alabama 23-10

Ole Miss at Vanderbilt - In the summer I was picking Vandy.  But after watching the Commodores this season and the way the Rebels were pummeled in Columbia, I have had a change of heart.  Also Ole Miss has had ten days to get ready for this one.. No looking ahead for Alabama here... Ole Miss  34-27

Texas A&M at Arkansas -  The Hogs relieve the SWC days with a game at Jerry Jones Stadium to play the unbeaten Aggies.   Texas A&M hasn't played anyone while the Hogs are tested...Arkansas 35-34

South Carolina  St at South Carolina-  The Gamecocks won a big game against the then #4 team in the country but the ol ball coach is still not happy with his offense.  S.Carolina 36-3.

Florida St. at Boston College -  It has been a long week in Tallahassee and perhaps the best thing for the FSU football team is to take a long road trip to Boston College where they will not have any reminders of South Florida.  The Seminoles are still in the ACC hunt but will not be if they lost at Chestnut Hill.  Home team has lost four straight..make it five FSU 20-16

Clemson at Maryland -  Both of these teams are coming off disappointing losses and there are reports the Tigers backup QB is not happy with the lack of playing time.   Doesn't matter because the Terps have not looked good at all this season..Clemson  33-17

Virginia at North Caroina -  The winless Cavaliers have had two weeks to get ready to face a Tar Heel team that will not be in a good mood after last week's loss at GT...UNC 28-7

Virginia Tech at Duke-  The Blue Devils have rebounded from their loss to Richmond with two wins in four games.. The Hokies will not have a letdown after Miami..VT   35-10

NC State at Wake Forest - Wolfpack have won three straight since the South Carolina loss. This should be an offensive battle with two solid quarterbacks..NC State  27-23

Oklahoma at Miami -   The Hurricanes got a big dose of reality last week and face an Oklahoma team that is still without Sam Bradford at QB.  For those of you who don't remember Miami used to blast the Sooners 20 years ago with speed.  The Sooners may have more speed in this message...Oklahoma  21-14

Michigan at Michigan St. - The unbeaten Wolverines head to East Lansing for the intrastate battle with the Spartans who are complaining that Big Blue has no respect for them. Michigan St. 17-14

Ohio State at Indiana -  The Buckeyes are on the road to face a Hoosier team that has offense and came so close to winning at the Big House last week.  Ohio State 38-24

Houston at UTEP - The unbeaten Cougars are ranked 12th and knocked off Texas Tech last week.  The Red Raiders win doesn't impress me and the Miners record is due to tough schedule and not the level of talent..  UTEP 42-40

USC at California - That loud thud you heard last week was all the experts nosediving off the Cal bandwagon after the Bears were thumped at Oregon.    Those same experts have been predicting all summer that Cal was going to knock off the Trojans.   I think the chances are better since the Bears were likely looking ahead last week and will play much better against a Trojan team that is still young enough to fall on the road in the Pac-10...Cal  24-17

Have a good weekend

September 23, 2009

Another five loss week but the problem is I missed on Georgia, Georgia Tech and FSU so put it wasn't that great a week.  The SEC and ACC schedules are cranking up so the gimme wins in the pick em game are over.

Ole Miss at South Carolina   The 4th ranked Rebels will finally get a chance to show the world if they are worthy of their lofty ranking.   The Gamecocks have been tested on the road at NC State and Georgia while the Ole Miss players are getting their first trip to Williams-Brice Stadium...South Carolina 23-16

Arizona St. at Georgia     The bad news for Willie Martinez is 93 points by the Georgia offense has put the spotlight on a Georgia defense that has allowed 80 points in those two games.  Some of the blame can be placed on turnovers but UGA defense needs to get its act together before they start a stretch of four big SEC games and only one of them is played in Athens....Georgia 30-21

Ball St. at Auburn   Tigers showed a lot coming from 14 down to beat West Virginia.  The Cardinals are winless and the Tigers are unbeaten heading to Rocky Top next week..
Auburn 49-17

LSU at Mississippi St.   Dan Mullen got a big win at Vanderbilt last week.   The problem is the Tigers are much better than the Commodores...LSU  35-14

Arkansas at Alabama    The Hogs have quarterback in Ryan Mallet who made some NFL type throws against Georgia.  The problem is the Bama defense is alot better than the Dogs...Alabama 27-10

Florida at Kentucky     The Gators have learned what being number one is all about with the performance being questioned after a ten point win over Tennessee when many expected a blowout.   While Tennessee's defense deserves a lot of credit, Saturday was the first example of how much the Gators miss Percy Harvin..   Florida doesn't need Tebow to carry the football too much againt a UK defense that banged up the Heisman winner two years ago in Lexington....Florida 35-13

Ohio at Tennessee   The Vols earned a lot of respect last week in Gainesville and need to get an offense if they have any chance against Auburn next week....Tennessee  45-7

Vanderbilt at Rice   The Commodores are coming off a loss last week at Mississippi State and have to be glad the Owls no longer have Jarrett Dillard...Vandy 27-23

North Carolina at Georgia Tech    This is a must win game for the Jackets who already have one Coastal Divison loss and cannot afford another.   Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson hasn't minced his words when he said his team is not executing like they should.   Carolina is a strong on defense and did a great job last year against the Jackets option...UNC 29-28

South Florida at Florida State    One of the biggest non conference games for the Seminoles with the opponent not being the Gators.  USF can gain some respect and recruiting edge with a win over an FSU team that is coming off a big win last week at BYU.... FSU 34-28

Miami at Virginia Tech  The Canes first two wins have put them as one of the leading contenders for the ACC title.   A win in Blacksburg has Miami in the drivers' seat in the Coastal Division.  Jacory Harris has been sharp but a Hokie defense is going to be ready on their home field...Virginia Tech 19-17

Wake Forest at Boston College    The Eagles are likely going to be in a bad mood after last week's loss at Clemson...BC   23-21

TCU at Clemson  The Horned Frogs want this game because it will give them argument for being in the race for the BCS national championship.  The Tigers are also looking for some respect...Clemson 27-24

Rutgers at Maryland   The Terps are in real trouble after a loss to Middle Tennessee State. Fortunately the Scarlet Knights are in worse shape...Maryland  31-27

Pittsburgh at NC State    The unranked and unbeaten Panthers roll into Raleigh for a battle against an Wolfpack squad that has working out the problems after their season opening loss to South Carolina... Pitt  17-13

NC Central at Duke:  This should be an automatic pick but we are talking about Duke but the Blue Devils did win at Army a few weeks back... Duke  35-24

Enjoy the weekend

September 16, 2009

Improvement in week two with a 13-5 record.  Missed the UVA and Auburn games and didn't think FSU would be that close but thought the Seminoles would break it open late. In a hurry so enough small talk.

Georgia Tech at Miami:  Jackets simply ran over the Hurricanes defense last year but Clemson may have shown the rest of the ACC what it takes to keep Jackets option in check..  Miami may need some lessons.... Georgia Tech 37-34

Florida St. at BYU:   I saw someone picking FSU because the Seminoles faced BYU's 3-3-5 defense last week against Jacksonville State.   That may be the case but BYU gets to face an FSU secondary that is very vunerable.  BYU  34-33

Boston College at Clemson:    Eagles fly into South Carolina for a big intra-divisional showdown.  I really like Tigers front line and QB Kyle Parker is going to be a good one if the Tigers can surround him with receivers like Jacolby Ford...Clemson 24-14

Duke at Kansas:  What is a great final four matchup could be an entertaining offensive shootout between head coaches David Cutcliffe and Mark Mangino...Kansas 44-27

East Carolina at North Carolina:  Tar Heels barely survived their trip to the Northeast and the Pirates from Greenville love to knock off the Heels from Chapel HIll... UNC  26-24

Nebraska at Virginia Tech:  Hokies look to restore the ACC's national reputation against a Husker program that is looking to regain the respect they once had... Virginia Tech 23-13

Middle Tennessee at Maryland:  The Terps better be ready because the Blue Raiders gave Clemson a fight two weeks ago..Maryland  23-21

Virginia at Southern Miss:  This game was supposed to be the big home game for the Eagles in Hattiesburg.   The Cavs would probably struggle to beat an Alcorn State squad USM took apart in their season opener... The odds of Al Groh surviving the season are not great..USM  27-23

Gardner-Webb at NC State:  Wolfpack get another tuneup... NC State  43-17

Elon at Wake Forest:   The Demon Deacons know all about FCS upsets..Wake Forest 29

In the SEC,

Georgia at Arkansas:  This game has worried me all summer for two reasons.  One the Hogs have had two weeks to prepare and the second is Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino is an offensive genius who will have a solid game plan to battle a Georgia defense that made the goal line stand last week but may not have enough gas after being on the field for 83 plays. If the UGA offense cannot control the clock against a less that stout Arkansas defense, it is going to be a long flight home for the Dogs again.....Arkansas 34-31

Tennessee at Flordia:  Gator fans have been waiting to get Lane Kiffin in the swamp for eight months after he accused the Gators of recruiting no-no-'s.  Kiffin has apologized but it will not be accepted until Tim Tebow scores several touchdowns.   Monte Kiffin is a defensive genius with a Super Bowl ring but don't Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks and Anthony McFarland didn't follow Kiffin to Rocky Top. Plus the QB situation at UT is not great after last week's loss to UCLA.. Florida 45-10

West Virginia at Auburn:   All the offense has Tiger fans excited more so that wins over Louisiana Tech and West Virginia.   The Mountaineers bring their own spread option offense with Noel Devine..  It is going to be a shootout that the Tigers take..Auburn 38-36

Louisville at Kentucky:    The battle of the Bluegrass has gone Kentucky's way since Bobby Petrino left the Ville.  Kentucky 23-20

North Texas at Alabama:   Nick Saban is worried about special teams letdowns against FIU but this game allows him to get Julio Jones and Roy Upchruch healthy for Arkansas next week....Alabama 38-7

Louisiana-Lafayette at LSU:  The Rajin Cajuns head to Death Valley for a Louisiana showdown... Tigers need this game after two tough ones tostart the season...LSU  35-10

Mississippi St. at Vanderbilt:   Tigers gave LSU fits while the Bulldogs were buried by the Auburn offense...  Vandy  has a score to settle after last year's game in Starkville...Vandy 19-17

Florida Atlantic at South Carolina:    The Gamecocks were their own worst enemy against Georgia and have to worry after their defense gave up 31 first half points to the Dogs...South Carolina 31-17

SE Louisiana at Ole Miss:  Rebels better not be looking ahead to a Thursday game next week at South Carolina... Ole Miss  42-22

September 10, 2009

The season is off to a decent start with a 15-6 record in week one but we did miss UGA, Auburn and South Carolina but did pick Richmond to upset Duke.   For you ACC fans who think the SEC is overrated or ACC football is up with the SEC.  SEC teams do not have two teams lose to 1-AA teams on the same day.  We have another Thursday game which means the picks have to be picked early in the week.

Clemson at Georgia Tech (Thursday):   This game could be the first two between these two teams this season since both have good chances of winning their divisions.   You can't make a prediction based on last week's performance because both teams had season openers where they dominated as usual.   I picked Clemson to win the Atlantic because they have so many starters returning and a star running back in C.J. Spiller.  The Jacket defense will try to put this game into the hands of the Tigers young quarterback. I think they will..... Georgia Tech 34-24

Duke at Army:   Duke's loss to Richmond is a sign of what will be a tough season for the Blue Devils.  Fortunately they face an Army team that has struggled recently and I believe the loss to the Spiders will have Duke ready for a win..... Duke  25-24

North Carolina at Connecticut:  The Tar Heels head into the northeast to take on a UConn football program that a few years back looked like it was on the fast track to being a power in the Big East. Huskies football has hit a road block but this could be close... UNC 28-20

Stanford at Wake Forest:  The Demon Deacons struggled against Baylor and now face a Stanford team that should be much improved under head coach Jim Harbaugh..Stanford 23-21

Marshall at Virginia Tech:   The Thundering Herd catch the Hokies after a tough loss to Alabama. There should be plenty of thunder in the Blacksburg Saturday....Virginia Tech 30-13

Kent St. at Boston College:  Eagles get another tuneup before conferene play after posting a shut out of the Golden Flashes last year in Cleveland...Boston College 38-10

TCU at Virginia:     The Cavaliers didn't help the ACC's image with a home loss to FCS William & Mary last week.   Now they face a TCU team that is ranked 16th in the nation and returns 15 starters.  This is the season opener for the Horned Frogs so UVA does have a chance to get off to a quick start which has me thinking an upset is possible...UVA  16-13

James Madison at Maryland:    Another ACC school facing another FCS teram but don't think the Terps will overlook the Dukes after what happened last week in Berkeley....Maryland 27-17

Murray St. at N.C. State:  The Wolfpack get to solve their offensive issues against the Racers...N.C. State 42-17

Jacksonville St. at Florida St:  The Seminoles are expected to win but have two things working against them.  A  short  week after a high powered game against Miami that was an emotionally draining loss.... Seminoles better get their secondary worked out in this one...FSU 52-16

South Carolina at Georgia:   The silver lining for the Georgia football team is they saw the good, bad and the ugly in a non-conference loss at Oklahoma State.   The ugly was an offense that failed to find the endzone after their opening drive.  The Gamecock defense is better that Ok State's and that doesn't make Bulldog fans feel better.  I believe the UGA offensive staff will be better organized and have a better plan for a game I think they have been pointing to all summer...Georgia 19-17

Troy at Florida:    Some thought the Trojans had the talent to give the Gators a game but Urbany Meyer will not have to worry about his players in the Florida heat on Saturday afternoon because all the Gators in uniform should be playing time.... Florida 56-17

Mississippi St. at Auburn:  After these two teams combined for 82 points in their season opener, we can only assume (and hope) this year's game will not be a repeat of last year's 3-2 epic.  Ironic how both teams have new head coaches this year.   Auburn offense had a big second half against Louisiana Tech but the State Bulldogs have more depth and I think Larry Mullen is very bright offensive mind... Miss. St.  20-10

UCLA at Tennessee:   Vols looked impressive against Western Kentucky team that UCLA is 180 degrees better than the Hilltoppers.  UT really gave this game away last year but I don't think that will happen on Rocky Top...UT  23-17

Florida International at Alabama:  The Crimson Tide really impressed me with their offense against the Hokies and I think could be better than the Gators this season... Alabama 44-0

Vanderbilt at LSU:   A huge early opener for both of these teams.   The Tigers are back from a late night game on the Pacific Northwest and face an experience Commodore team that I believe can pull the upset....I just don't think it is going to happen....LSU 26-22

Other big games.

Notre Dame at Michigan:  A big game for two coaches who are on both on the hot seat.  I think the Irish are a little further along than the Wolverines...Notre Dame  24-20

USC at Ohio St.:  This early season test puts the winner in the national championship chase and the loser has work to do to catch up.  Trojans have freshman quarterback on the road in one of college football's toughest places to play but I think the USC ground game
is too much...USC 27-23
