Albany -- The 2003 Georgia Games Torch Run will start in Albany, and the community is planning a birthday bash to celebrate. Since 1989, the Georgia Games has promoted amateur sports in the Peach State.

The Games begin with an Olympic Torch run throughout the state. July 7th the Georgia Games torch will be lit in a ceremony at the Albany Government Center.

Albany Recreation Department Marketing Coordinator Becky Belcher said "We've never had the actual beginning point here in Albany. It's always in Valdosta or Savannah, or something like that. To be the head point for the Games is an honor, and we're really happy about it."

A community birthday celebration will coincide with the Torch Run. It will honor the 150th anniversary of Dougherty County's founding, and the 100th year anniversary of Albany State.

The city of Albany has made a bid to host the finals of the Georgia State Games in 2005.
