One dead after Saturday night shooting in Valdosta

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - On Saturday at approximately 9:00pm, Valdosta Police Department personnel responded to the 400 block of Vallotton Drive, Valdosta, Georgia in regards to a person being shot call.

Upon arrival, police officers located Willie Whetstone, Jr., 26 year old Valdosta resident in a parking area just east of 402 Vallotton Drive.

Whetstone had received a bullet wound to his torso.  Lowndes County EMS units responded, and Whetstone was immediately transported to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment where he died a short time after arrival.

Detectives and Crime Scene personnel along with patrol units covered the area and located witnesses and gathered information on potential suspects.  Information received by detectives during the investigation indicates the shooting may have stemmed from an earlier argument between Whetstone and other males in the area and that possibly the victim was acquainted with the offender.

At the time of press release, no arrests have been made in this case.

Detectives are currently following up leads and information and asks that anyone having any information about this offense to please contact the Valdosta Police Department at 229-242-2606 or call the crime tip line at 229-293-3091.
