VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - A crowd of over 9,000 fans filled Bazemore-Hyder Stadium Saturday night.
Many of those fans left early. Valdosta State threw five interceptions enroute to a 31-24 loss to Newberry.
The Blazers fell to 0-1 on the season and the loss marks the first time since 1998 that Valdosta State lost a home opener.
"We had our opportunities in the game and did not finish them off. That is what is disappointing. We were in a position to make plays and just didn't do it" said head coach David Dean.
"I think we got comfortable with the lead. Those guys they were hungry and they just kept playing" said running back Ronnye Nelson.
"They definitely had the momentum going and they took it away from us. That is just one of those things. We have to hold on to it and do the best we can" said quarterback Russ Callaway.
According to coach Dean quarterback kellen lewis has an arm injury and will undergo further tests to determine what is wrong.
Valdosta State will look to rebound on September 12th when it hosts Southern Arkansas.
