Optimism abounds. Hope is eternal. At least until kickoff Friday night- everyone is 0-0- with their eyes on the state playoffs. Certainly the case at our game of the week in Sylvester
Jason Tone's team, working over the Purple Hurricanes early , first possession for the Rams, The pitch to Dontavious Buford, he's to the outside and gone , the hardest hit he'll feel is from his own teammate in the end zone, Rams up 6-0.
The ground game was on point for Tone's squad in the first half , Kendarius Smith refuses to go down on this 20-yard gain... the drive would stall thanks to penalties.
Fitzgerald struggling in the air, Gerald Morgan's pass gets knocked down by Eric Burrows on a 3rd down play, 13-0 Rams midway through the first
Morgan on the ground was a different case , He paced a long touchdown drive using his legs , punctuated by bowling over this Worth County defender into the end zone , Fitzgerald down 13-6 at the end of the first
They went onto win 27-20.
Down at Martin Stadium- the Lowndes Vikings playing host to 6A rival Roswell. Midway through the third, number 28 Carlos Ice returns blocked punt for TD for the Vikings. Next drive, number 12 Ryan Hobbs has a good punt return, sets up a TD for Vikings two plays later.
Number 30 Corveon White also got a sack for the Vikings before third quarter ended. Lowndes up 30 nothing at end of third.
Over in Tifton- the Blue Devils want to end a long playoff drought this season. Trying to get started tonight with Henry County. Brodie Field packed as usual to start the season , And all would leave happy tonight
The Blue Devils were dominant early , Up 24-8 with 5 left in the 2nd quarter , Malik Henry going to get the punt at midfield , makes a cut to the inside and gets one more block down the field , Tift County goes up 31-8 with the extra point
The defense frustrated Henry Co. quarterback Marquez Souder all night , Blue Devils wouldn't let up on their lead to end the half , First , a hoard of Blue Devils bring him down for a sack
Plays later , J.T. Graden registers a sack as a one man band. All Devils in this one- they start 2014 right with a 45-8 blowout win.
The Thomasville Bulldogs want to make a run at a region title- hosting West Laurens at Veterans Memorial. Tied at 14 in the first- Garrel Quainton looking deep to big Justin Smith- who tight ropes it inside the 20. Pretty play from the Raiders.
After a few penalties- the screen pass snuffed out by Andrew Robinson at the end of the quarter.
In the second- Darius Bradford won't be denied- he gets to pay dirt for the West Laurens touchdown. 21-14 Raiders.
Dogs trying to rally before the break- but Junior Haynes pass is picked off. West Laurens holds off Thomasville, 42-35 the final. What a game in the Rose City.
How about a South Georgia showdown in Ocilla- the Indians of Irwin County hosting Early County.
2nd quarter- Bobcats lead 7-0- Zack Tolar trying to tie the ballgame-the rollout and catch appears to be a touchdown catch. Go crazy folks- but not for long. That one's called back.
On fourth down- the screen to Jakyron Young is stopped short. The Cats hold.
On offense- Calvin Brown breaks off a nice run for Early. 18 yards and a first down. This one though ends in a tie. 7-7 is the final. It's like kissing your sister.
Big things expected out of Homerville this season. Clinch County opening with Calhoun County at Panther Stadium. Calhoun gets ball to start. QB Dajohn Williams tries a big pass to Deante Scott, but it falls incomplete.
FB Anthony Johnson has nice run for Calhoun, but they go three and out on the drive.
Midway through first, Clinch County's Octavis Johnson has a nice hard run.
Later same drive, number 9 trinity cooper runs it in for the Panthers. Was the first score of the game.
Clinch was up 16 nothing at end of first.
Randolph Clay opening the season at The Pit- hosting Lanier County. The Devils stepping up on defense early. The Bulldog run up the middle gets nowhere.
Randolph-Clay going to their big man, showing off the speed and gets to the end zone. 6-0 Red Devils. Lanier County playing tough. The QB keeper picks up a first down for the Dawgs. Randolph-Clay gets the season started in the win column though, 18-12 is the final.
Turner County hosting Terrell County. After a Greenwave fumble- Malik Holley scores from a yard out. It's 7-0 Rebels off the turnover. Terrell punting to Kwan Hillman- and Kwan is thinking about six. Weaving his way through the Wave defense. All the way down to the five yard line. Rebels in business. Terrell bowing their necks though. Get the sack on fourth down to force the turnover. Turner pulls out the home victory.
There have been a lot of changes in the GISA ranks this off season. Two programs that know that well are SGA and Westwood. The Wildcats are now a AAA school. SGA is now under the tutelage of Eric Folmar. They'd meet tonight in Damascus- a tight game early. 1st quarter- Wildcats trailing 7-2.
Collier Baggett fools everyone on the QB keeper- picks up some nice yards and a Westwood first down. Later in the drive- fourth and goal- Baggett on the rollout and he gets to the corner for the touchdown. 9-7 Cats. A good effort out of SGA- but Westwood pulls away in the second half for a 35-17 win. The Deerfield-Windsor Knights crossing state lines to open the season-taking on Maclay in Tallahassee.
Knights leading by 14 in the 1st. The Marauders going for it on fourth down- the handoff isn't clean and Deerfield takes over on downs. 3rd and long for the Knights- the QB keeps it and picks up what he needs and more. 25 yards and oast the sticks for the Deerfield first down. MaClay trying to rally- the slant route is completed and Austin cain makes him pay. A big hit- but a flag for targeting. First down Maclay. Later- another Marauder pass picks up a first down. But it's Deerfield that goes into enemy territory and picks up the win- 27-12 the final in Tallahassee.
It's a new era for the Sherwood Christian Eagles- who now play in the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association. They began play hosting Abbeville Christian. Over at the Sam Smith Sports Complex- the Eagles trying to start off with a win. Having offensive trouble against the Generals. The speed option play is snuffed out for no gain. On third down- SCA going to the air- look at the effort from Greg Elder- full extension, but no dice.
