ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Three murders in three days in Crisp County and Friday three suspects are in jail. The latest murder happened Thursday night in Cordele.
Sixty-two year old Walter Bell was gunned down in an alley behind the American Legion. Friday police charged 17-year old Maraquarius Greene with murder. Investigators brought him to the crime scene handcuffed and shackled and say he is cooperating with investigators. They also found the gun they believe was used in the crime. Neighbors describe Bell as someone who kept to himself. Police haven't said what they think the motive might be.
"I've never known Walter to be a violent person or to be no problem like that and like I said I've known him all my life, I can say that," said Joe Reese, a neighbor.
"Appears to have been shot twice. Investigations reveal he went to the store in the 500 block of 16th which is about as block and a half away, walked down the alley. People confronted him there wasn an argument that's where he was allegedly shot," said Cordele Police Chief Dwayne Orrick.
Bell was able to walk to the intersection with 17th Avenue where he collapsed and friends called 911.
Investigators say Friday's heavy rain made it difficult to process the crime scene. Late this afternoon, they were still questioning several people in the shooting.
