ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A jogger in Crisp County stumbled onto an apparent crime scene this morning. He spotted an SUV burning in a cotton field and when officers arrived, they found a body inside.

The discovery was made in a desolate area of Northern Crisp County near the corner of Blackshear and Airport Roads.

"When I woke up this morning I heard someone got killed and burnt up in a truck so I'm just trying to be nosy," said Charles Doster.

Sheriff Donnie Harrelson says the 911 call came in this morning at 7:15am when a jogger came across a burning SUV in a cotton field, once the fire was put out a dead man was found inside.

"Obviously the victim hasn't even been identified at this point the remains have been burned beyond recognition." said special agent Trebor Randle.

GBI Agents have discovered evidence of foul play, so they are treating it as a homicide. Today an ambulance took the body off to the state crime lab for an Autopsy.

"We don't have any idea how long that's going to take I know we rely on things such as dental records, if there are any surgical things left there from some type of surgery,"  said Agent Randle.

They were able to run the license plate, and the Sheriff says they know who the SUV is registered to, Now they are trying to locate that person.

"I wouldn't say this is normal, not something you see everyday where you have a vehicle on fire and you find a body inside but anytime you have a situation like this we are going to contact the state fire Marshall office to find if arson was in play, like I said there has been some evidence revealed causing us to treat it as a homicide right now," said Agent Randle.

Agents say the SUV was only 50 yards off the road, so it did not appear anyone was trying to hide it.

If you have information on this crime, call the Crisp County Sheriff's Office at 229-276-2600.
