ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Dougherty County students continue to struggle with the SAT.

Scores were again below the state average of 1,460. Only 331 Dougherty County students took the SAT last year, but school leaders are encouraged that there was a 22 percent increase in the number of African American students who took the test.

"In Dougherty County, we try to encourage students to take the next step to go to another level in their educational process and that includes taking the SAT so we have a higher number," said R.D. Harter, DCSS Public Information Officer.

In contrast, Lee County's class of 2009 was among the top in the state when it came to SAT scores. 156 of the 375 graduates took the SAT and scored an average of 1,483.
