Sylvester woman creates utility rate petition

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A petition going around the city of Sylvester is generating a wave of response among citizens regarding utility rates.

Vanessa Jordan has teamed up with city councilman Larry Johnson in creating a petition for a flat utility rate each month.

Right now people are paying a fixed rate but their total depends on how much electricity they use each month.

Jordan and Johnson want citizens to pay an average rate each month, and so far they have gotten more than 100 signatures.

"Everywhere you go you have people complaining about their light bill, everywhere you go you hear people complaining their light bill is 4 or $500.00 dollars and people are on a fixed income such as myself and we need this light bill lowered," said Vanessa.

Jordan and Johnson plan to present council members with the petition and address the issue at a meeting in September.
