Blazers not overlooking Newberry

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -  Valdosta State is ready to kick off their season this Saturday night against Newberry College.

VSU head coach David Dean will learn a lot about his Blazers against a Newberry team that won a share of the South Atlantic conference title last season.

The Blazers overcame 11 penalties to win 14-9 last year at Newberry.

Coach Dean believes a lack of focus led to those penalties and the coach says that will not be a problem Saturday.

David Dean said. "We know about Newberry this year. We know they are a good football team. Our guys are preparing to go out and hopefully get off to a good start this season."

Nose tackle Demario Jones said. "They are going to give us a good challenge. They are a good team. I remember when coach Dean was first hired and how excited we were to get him his first win. They are going to come pretty jacked up and we are going to have to match that."

This is the third straight year Valdosta State will open the 2009 college football season at home.

Game time is 7:00 p.m. Saturday in Valdosta.
