ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A government program that boosted auto sales across the country is now officially over. At 8 p.m. Monday, Cash For Clunkers wrapped up. Many south Georgia dealers spent the day closing out last-day deals.
Ford Town of Albany's lot is pretty bare after brisk weekend sales. Between Friday and Monday they sold nearly 30 vehicles under the clunkers program that gave up to $4,500 to buyers who traded gas guzzlers for new fuel-efficient vehicles.
Overall, Ford Town sold more than 60 vehicles under the program and now they have more time to process the paperwork. The government announced Monday that dealers have more time to get it all done.
"It's going to help us a lot. Some of the ladies had to come in on Sunday to do all the paperwork and they got it done but they're giving us until tomorrow at noon to give us a chance to get some of that paperwork in so we're thankful for that," said Ford Town General Sales Manager Shawn Evans.
Sales managers at Ford Town say the program was successful and they wish it could last longer. Some dealers complained about the slow pace of reimbursements from the government but Ford Town has been repaid for most of their deals.
