AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - Since Sumter County and Americus High merged schools in 2004, they've never had a winning football season at Americus-Sumter.

Head Coach Mark Wilson's Panthers have a solid nucleus back from last years team with seven starters returning on both sides of the ball.

The offense will be led by returning quarterback Shawn Robinson.

Leading receiver Keon Wiggins is also back and so is leading rusher Jerroski Walton.

Linebacker Sean Stewart and defensive tackle Jonathan Battle should lead the defense.

The question mark will be in the secondary.

Coach Wilson is entering his 4th year as head coach and says its time to lead the Panthers to the post season.

"It's taken us a little while to build the program and we feel like we've got people in place now that know what we expect and you know so it's time for us to get up there and make the playoffs and you know make some noise" said Wilson.

The Panthers look to get the winning started in the season opener Thurday night at Dougherty.

"You want to win every game you know and so it's important for everyone to win that first game and get you off to a good start and the kids will come back and work harder even when you win so we're gonna try to get it" said Wilson.

The Panthers kick off the season Thursday night against Dougherty at Hugh Mills Stadium.
