Two shot, one killed in Americus gunfight

By Cade Fowler - bio | email

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - An exchange of gunfire turned deadly late Thursday night. Several rounds were fired along a block of Cherokee Street striking two men, one of them fatally.

"We do have one person that's deceased and another that was injured. We're still trying to figure out the details of what exactly transpired at that location," said Americus Police Chief James Green.

Police blocked parts of Cherokee Street as GBI agents collected evidence from the street where the shooting went down. It was here where 19-year-old Courtney Jones and 25-year-old Gilbert Brown were shot inside an SUV.

When police arrived, Jones was dead in the driver's seat. Brown was taken by EMS to a hospital.

"I just heard some gunshots. It sounded like grenades," said Oscar Lester.

Lester was at home when a gunfight unfolded just outside his back door. He said "I seen the truck in the bushes and I heard some more gunshots, so I ran back in the house."

"There was an exchange of gunfire. We don't have details of who was doing the shooting. We're still canvassing the area," said Green.

While police search for a motive in this case, investigators worked into the early morning hours interviewing witnesses.

Detectives are questioning persons of interest but so far, no arrests have been made.

"We've got GBI, the sheriff's department, Americus PD and the coroner's office working on this together to get the rest of the details so we can find out exactly what happened."

Gilbert Brown is listed in stable condition at Phoebe Sumter Hospital.

This is the second homicide in Americus this year.
