ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Economic developers hope a designated military zone in Albany will soon pay off by attracting new businesses there.
The area around MCLB is one of five military zones in Georgia designated by the Department of Community Affairs. It was recently featured in an article a trade magazine about good locations for defense contractors.
The designation allows for a $3,500 tax credit for businesses that add two or more employees and maintain those positions. The article in Southern Business and Development has the potential to reach thousands of businesses who may consider relocating.
"We're making a very proactive effort to spread the word even more. We were recently in Southern Business and Development as a designated destination for defense which we've very proud of," said Barbara Rivera Holmes of the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission.
The zone includes the Cooper Tire Plant, the planned new Walmart location, and the Albany Dougherty Business Park.
