EDISON, GA (WALB) - Calhoun County High School is mourning the sudden death of boys basketball coach Jerome Carter.

The 47-year old Carter collapsed and died during football practice Monday evening at the school in Edison.

Calhoun County football coach John Williams says a player spotted Carter lying beside his truck during Monday's practice.

Everyone ran to help Carter but Williams says Carter was already dead when they arrived.

He says Carter had not complained of feeling ill and was enjoying his first season of helping with the football team.

Joseph Carter graduated from Calhoun County High School 30 years ago and returned to coach the boys basketball teams at the high school and middle school four years ago.

Williams says in four years Carter was working hard to restore the tradition rich Calhoun County basketball program to one of the best in the area.

John Williams said. "That legacy that coach Rufus built in the past. He was able to restore some of that and he had plans for the program in the future because there were so many kids he had in his program from middle school to high school. He wanted to make sure every child knew what type of program he was trying to run."

Ministers and other counselors were on hand at school on Tuesday to talk with grieving students and teachers.

Williams says funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later in the week for coach Jerome Carter.
