Jail urged to shut down, but where do inmates go?

January 21, 2003

Terrell County - In December, a Grand Jury found the Terrell County jail inadequate, inhumane and unsafe. They suggested it be shut down, but county officials can't decide where to put inmates.

This is footage taken inside the jail. County officials have decided to look to the state for help. Right now, state inmates are housed at the Terrell County Correctional Institute. The facility is County owned, but has a contract with the state.

If the state says no to putting County inmates in the Correctional Institute, the county will have to build another jail or contract with a surrounding county until renovations are complete.

The Grand Jury noted the jail had poor locks, had no smoke detectors or fire sprinklers and conditions are unsanitary.
