Albany Tech faces furloughs

By Cade Fowler - bio | email

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Nearly 200 full time employees at Albany Technical College will be furloughed for one to three days.

The furloughs will save the college nearly $80,000.

Albany Tech is using a tiered furlough system that calls for the lowest paid employees to take the fewest unpaid days off

"We're not the only technical college in our system that's using the tiered program. We determined that it might be a littler fairer if we tiered the way we took the furlough days so that individuals that earn the least didn't have to bear an unusual amount of the burden," said Albany Technical College President Dr. Anthony Parker.

The furloughs will be taken between September and December and will not interrupt school operations.

Staff members will meet with department heads to determine which days they will take off.

On-line classes will be offered and substitute instructors will fill-in so class schedules aren't disrupted.
