Georgia Tech ready to deal with hype

ATLANTA, GA (WALB) - Georgia Tech football held their first scrimmage of fall camp this morning and then took a break for their annual fan day.

A crowd estimated to be three times higher than last year was on hand for autographs and the chance to meet their favorite Jacket players and coaches.

Head coach Paul Johnson is a popular man after winning nine games in his first season and beating archrival Georgia.

The big fan day crowd is just another example of the big expectations for the Jackets in Johnson's second season.

Georgia Tech is ranked 15th in the coaches preseason poll.

Coach Johnson says the players are too busy getting ready for the upcoming season to worry about preseason polls.

"I don't know if that is any different for the players than it has ever been. I think the difference comes from the fan base and everybody talking about them and those kinds of things. so, they will have to learn how to handle that a little bit" said Johnson.

"Being ranked number 15 is all good but it is better to be higher. We are just trying to get to that point and win the ACC championship" said running back Jonathan Dwyer.

Georgia Tech will kick off the season at home on September 5th versus Jacksonville State.
