VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Dougherty High product Ronnye Nelson may have played quarterback in high school but that doesn't mean he was looking forward to playing the position at Valdosta State.
Nelson was the Blazers starting quarterback at the end of spring practice.
Over the summer, VSU signed junior college star Jimmy Coy, Kellen Lewis transferred from Indiana, two high school recruits arrived on campus and Russ Callaway has made a sooner than expected return from knee surgery.
All those quarterbacks have allowed Nelson to remain at running back.
Ronnye would have played quarterback if his team needed.
He believes the team will benefit more with him carrying the football.
"Whichever way I can help. Playing running back it is going to be a big difference in the backfield. We have got a lot of guys that can tote the ball and I am just excited about being back at running back" said Nelson.
Valdosta State opens the 2009 football season August 29th at home against Newberry College.Feedback
