Grand Island makes a comeback with county

January 16, 2003

Lee County-- When Lee County took over the Grand Island Country Club in November, the commission promised to make major improvements to make the facilities the finest in the South Georgia area.

The man in charge of those improvements is new general manager and superintendent Matt Jones. High on his list is the installation of an eight foot wide cart path that will run from the first tee to the 18th green.

Grand Island's 73 sand bunkers are also being remodeled. Jones believes the end results will bring back former members to Grand Island as well as new ones. Jones expects the cart path and remodeling of the bunkers to be completed sometime in March.

In addition to the work on the golf course, Lee County is also unveiling its rates for members. The former owner of Grand Island, John Gay, gave the country club to Lee County when the county purchased 25 acres of land next to the Wal-Mart shopping center from Gay.
