ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Congressman Sanford Bishop says the U.S. military mission in Iraq is going well, and the pace of troops returning home should pick up.

Bishop led a Congressional delegation this week that met with military, political and intelligence leaders in Iraq.

U.S. troops recently handed over much more control to Iraqi forces.  Bishop says that mission change is going well.

"Things seem to be going very, very well. In fact, better than expected. The level of violence is down. Our involvement there in direct combat activities is greatly reduced. Several of the troops from Georgia, for example, are nearing the end of their tour of duty. Some will be returning home within the next month, and they, of course, are looking forward to that very much," said Congressman Sanford Bishop, (D) Georgia.

Bishop met with Georgia troops and even delivered south Georgia pecans to them.

He spoke to us Thursday evening from Dubai and will return home next week.
