VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Finding a starting quarterback is priority number one for the Valdosta State Blazers during their fall camp.

It looked like running back Ronnye Nelson from Dougherty High would open fall camp under center after spring practice.

Nelson will get his wish and remain at running back with the arrival of all-Big Ten Kellen Lewis from Indiana and junior college signee Jimmy Coy over the summer.

Russ Callaway, who was slated to be the starter before a knee injury at the end of spring practice, was also on the field for the first day or practice and could be cleared to play for the opening game.

VSU head coach David Dean is hoping to make an early call on the Blazers staring quarterback.

David Dean said.
"We would like to have it by the time we go out for our first scrimmage. We want our players who is going to be our quarterback so they can hang their hat on that person."

Kellen Lewis said. "Right now my biggest focus is cutting down on my mistakes and not killing myself before you focus too much on competing with somebody else."

Jimmy Coy said. "Learning the meetings and make sure I have the offense down for practice.  get my throwing arm ready and just great ready to play."

Valdosta State's first scrimmage is August 15th and the season opener is August 29th at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium against Newberry College.
