ALBANY, GA (WALB) - University of Auburn football Legend and Albany native Cleve Wester has died at the age of 72.

Wester had been battling prostate cancer and died around 5:00 Monday morning at his Albany home with his wife Elizabeth at his side.

Wester played offensive line for Auburn in the late 50's and was a life long supporter of the Tigers.

Wester was very good friends with former Auburn coach Pat Dye and played a significant role in Dye's hiring at Auburn in 1981.

Here in Albany Wester was well known for his community involvement.

Albany Mayor Willie Adams was a friend of Wester's for nearly four decades and says that the fervor Cleve had for Albany was remarkable.

"Cleve showed love for his community. He showed love for his fellow man. He showed love for his business and he was a fair business person and Cleve was just a joyful person to be around" said Adams.

Wester owned and operated the Cleve Wester Tire Mart here in Albany. He was a member of Auburn's National Championship team in 1957.
