ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A man was shot and killed in Albany Saturday morning. Someone in the home police say the victim was trying to rob shot him.

The victim was 20-year-old Christopher Childress.

The shooting happened shortly before 8:15 Saturday morning in the 200 block of North Madison St.; authorities are still piecing together exactly what happened.

A bloodied white sheet covered the body of the robbery suspect.

"Preliminary indications are that this was an attempted robbery whether they knew the person or not is still under review," said Greg Edwards, Dougherty District Attorney.

Police tell us the suspect went to the front door and knocked.

When the victim answered he tried to pull the man out of the house. A second person, Reggie Wilson, was inside the house he heard the commotion and shot the victim.

"He was shot mid-section at least one time," said Edwards.

The victim apparently had a weapon of his own, the handgun still on the porch where he was shot.

The district attorney said Childress may not have been working alone.

"This is a gang related, it's apparently an effort by gang members to carry out some type of robbery," said Edwards.

The two men who were inside the home are cooperating with police.

"The persons who resided in the home are being questioned," but the case isn't yet closed. "It's a gang related situation, and the gang unit was activated and actively searching for other suspects," said Edwards.

This is the fourth homicide in Albany this year, and the second one police say is gang related.
