ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  Demolition has started on nearly a block of dilapidated properties downtown to make way for a new SOWEGA Council on Aging office.

LRA Contractors started tearing down the Old Byne Memorial Baptist Church in the 700 block of North Jefferson Street. All but two properties in the block will be knocked down.

The Council on Aging will renovate the historic portion of the building and move all of their services including a new community center under one roof.

Council Director Kay Hind said it's taken a long time to get to this point. "It's taken us about three years to get to this far so I hope we'll be able to start construction next year."

The construction will revitalize what's been a block of vacant buildings littered with graffiti.

Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital sold the property to the Council on Aging for one dollar to make the project possible.
