ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A cigarette may have sparked a fire that burned an East Albany apartment building overnight.

The fire started just after midnight at 109 Marie Road. Five people had to be evacuated from the building.

Firefighters worked to keep flames from spreading to other units.

Firefighters say the person who lives inside the apartment where the fire started was out of town, but told them that other people use the apartment.

Deputy Fire Chief Ron Rowe said  "It appears to have started in the bedroom. We are not positive yet on a cause, what made the fire start. But it appears to have started in the bedroom on the bed."

Firefighters say there were lots of cigarette butts and make shift ashtrays in the burned out bedroom, and suspect that could have played a part in the blaze.
