City adopts hiring freeze

January 9, 2003

FITZGERALD -- It's not a happy new year so far for Fitzgerald.

After a year where sales tax revenues were down almost 10 percent, Mayor Gerald Thompson put a freeze on hiring and capital spending. That means positions like the Main Street Director will go unfilled, but the mayor says he's willing to take on a little extra work.

"It's just a precautionary measure to keep us from getting upside down on the budget," Thompson said. I don't spend money when I have it."

Thompson says the move could last only a few months. He thinks things might have bottomed out late last year and the city's economy might already be on the rebound.
