Representatives to select speaker

January 9, 2003

Albany-- The Georgia legislative session begins Monday, and the first vote taken will decide who will be the new Speaker of the House.

Two Democrats are vying for the job-- Terry Coleman of Eastman and Larry Walker of Perry.

Walker is being backed by House Republicans. Who controls the gavel in the State House will drive the session's agenda.

District 135 Representative Lawrence Roberts says the vote to decide the next Speaker will be the most important of the session, and historic for the state.

"A coalition trying to take control over the last remaining body that's not being controlled by the Governor, so in that sense it's going to be very important," said Roberts. "It's going to be historical, anyway you put it, it's going to be historical."

Roberts says Monday he will vote for Terry Coleman as the next Speaker.
