Albany-- A large portion of Northwest Albany was left in the dark Wednesday morning because of a power outage.

A Georgia Power electrical line at Old Dawson Road and Pointe North fell about 6:30 AM, cutting off power to over 1,100 homes and businesses.

The clamp that holds the conductor and the line had been damaged by lightning. Because of the heavy load on the line caused by below freezing temperatures, the conductor failed.

It took Georgia Power a couple of hours to get the system going again. "Once you get this kind of temperatures that we've had the last couple of nights, everybody's heating units are all on at one time, it's hard to pick up all the load at one time," said Ga. Power Manager Bernie Spell.

The line was repaired and power restored to most customers by ten o'clock.
