Broad Ave. Bridge construction delayed by mussels

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The start of construction on the Broad Avenue Bridge is more than a year away and the structure will be repaired rather than a new bridge being built.

After another meeting Tuesday, Department of Transportation officials said the footings on the bridge that were weakened by scrubbing will be stabilized so the bridge can be reopened. There is a ten-month waiting period before construction can begin.

By then, crews won't be able to get into the water because of the Purple Bank Climbing Mussels less than 20 feet from the bridges footers.

"There's possibly a spawning period during that April to July for these mussels and we would not be allowed to even get in the water during that time," said Craig Solomon, DOT District Spokesman.

It will be August before construction can potentially begin and the Department of Transportation doesn't want to estimate how long the work could take. Cost estimates for the project must still be finalized.
