Albany- Keep Albany Dougherty Beautiful collected hundreds of Christmas trees at three collection sites Saturday.

People who recycled a tree received a free seedling. The trees will be chopped and turned into mulch. But organizers that's just one use for the trees.

Judy Bowles, of Keep Albany Dougherty Beautiful, says fisherman drop the trees into their ponds, and the evergreens act as a habitat for the fish.

The mulch will be used for erosion and weed control around thousands of trees planted at the YMCA sports park on Gillionville Road.
