Valdostans kick off Kwanzaa

December 27, 2002

Valdosta - The week-long celebration of Kwanzaa is underway. Thursday night, people in Valdosta kicked off the event remembering their African-American ancestors and heritage.

Each night, one of seven different principles is celebrated. They include unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Celebrators say Kwanzaa is often mistaken for the African-American Christmas.

"The holiday itself is not even created based on any specific African religion," said Kisia Kimmons. "It is designed to celebrate our people coming from slavery to where we are today."

An estimated 20 million African-Americans celebrate Kwanzaa each year. The celebration ends New Years Day.
