DAWSON, GA (WALB) -  The Terrell County Sheriff and county commissioners reach a compromise to open the new Terrell County Jail.

The U. S. Justice Department ordered the county to build a new facility because of conditions at the jail.

It should have opened in April, but a disagreement over staffing levels erupted between Sheriff John Bowens and Commissioners.

Thursday, Bowens agreed to try to run the new jail with 18 employees instead of the 21 he asked for. He says the Department of Justice Recommendation for the facility was 27 employees and the Georgia Sheriff's Association recommended 28.

Bowens expects to have his staff trained in time to open the new jail by August.
